Natural Ammonite whole fossil or part of fossil stone. Good for decoration, display, and collections.
Ammonites are the most widely known fossils. They have held a fascination for many people throughout the ages. They were thought to possess magical powers and thus were much sought after. Buying and wearing ammonite as amulets brings good luck and prosperity into your life.
Ammonites became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period, approximately 65 million years ago, and we now find them only in their fossilized state. All the shallow seas teemed with ammonites as they were strictly marine animals. As they died and sank to the bottom of the sea, they became preserved in the sediment. Over millions of years, the landscapes changed with the earth's crust shifting and folding, resulting in some marine sediment being moved along and pushed to the surface of the earth. Ammonites are often found in pockets of earth and preserved in a host of materials. They usually have the soft inner shell part filled with minerals such as shale, ironstone, and sandstone, but sometimes the outer shell has been replaced by the host rock where a calcite or dolomite replacement is seen.
The fact that ammolite is considered one of the rarest gems in the world today causes an ever increasing furor for collectors to be placed on a waiting list for the top quality gems and jewellery pieces.
